Dr. Muriel Johnson Providence*
Fourth President
1978 - 1986
Dr. Muriel Lemon Johnson, who later became known as Dr. Muriel Johnson Providence, served with distinction as our fourth president from 1978 to 1986. Throughout her tenure, she was steadfast in her commitment to advancing the foundational aspirations of our esteemed organization. Demonstrating remarkable diligence and visionary leadership, she successfully identified a magnificent and spacious mansion with 15 elegantly appointed rooms located at 609 South Davis Avenue in Richmond, Virginia. Under her guidance, the organization not only acquired this significant property but also navigated the complexities of liquidating the mortgage and securing a stable and central headquarters in November 1981.
Dr. Johnson Providence's leadership marked a transformative era for the organization, as she played a pivotal role in expanding its reach to an international audience. In June 1981, she orchestrated the first international convention held outside the United States in the idyllic setting of Barbados, West Indies. The success of this convention laid the groundwork for subsequent growth, leading to the establishment of a chapter in Trinidad shortly thereafter.
In her ongoing efforts to enrich the organization's impact, Dr. Providence spearheaded the initiation of an Endowment Fund, a vital resource aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability and support for the organization’s initiatives. Moreover, she established Regional Conferences as a strategic means of engaging local communities and broadening the organization's outreach. This innovative approach proved instrumental in inspiring many local and state members to participate actively in the International conference, fostering a more profound sense of connection and commitment to the organization's mission.
